Building on 20 years of experience in providing DNA analysis services to the University of Dundee, the Genetics Core Services Unit at the College of Medicine Dentistry & Nursing continues to expand the array of techniques available to research and clinical groups in Tayside. Our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) service delivers rapid, inexpensive and accurate genome data into the hands of our Principal Investigators permitting the process of discovery to advance at an accelerated rate. The first phase of our NGS strategy utilises Roche and Fluidigm technologies to provide 100,000 reads of 400 base pairs of DNA sequence in a single overnight run. This instrument is ideally suited to clinical projects that target specific genomic regions for large numbers of samples. Phase two will incorporate an Illumina HiSeq platform capable of delivering three billion reads of 2 x 100 base pairs of genomic sequence in approximately 11 days. Geared towards whole genome analysis this platform represents a paradigm shift in our sequencing capability and will provide a new approach to elucidating genomic structure and function.
